Scholarship athletes at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) will be asked to undergo thorough medical tests to ensure they are all fit enough to receive intensive training in their respective sports and compete in the international arena.

  A joint venture with the Shatin International Medical Centre Union Hospital, the tests will commence this week with over 240 athletes attending different tests including blood and urine and other laboratory tests.

  The Union Hospital will provide all technical support, including equipment and physicians, and will also make additional manpower available to cope with the increased workload.

  This will be the second year that the institute has run medical check-ups for it's scholarship athletes.

  Martin Lam, associate director (Technical Services) of the HKSI, said the tests would be a safety precaution taken in the athletes' interests.

  'We want to ensure athletes who are joining our sports scholarship programme are fit for training in their respective sports,' Mr Lam said.

  'Last year, a number of athletes were identified through the medical tests for further investigation before they could continue training.

  'One athlete was even recommended to stop all intensive training by the physician.'   Mr Lam was also delighted that the Union Hospital had agreed to work with the institute for the first time and to extend their service hours to late evening for the athletes' convenience.

  'When we conducted the first medical check-up last year, athletes had to do the tests in an ordinary laboratory, but now with the help of the hospital, athletes can make their own arrangement within a period of three weeks and will only have to attend once to complete the test,' he said.

  'They will also receive professional medical advice.'
