For the better part of the last 15 years, the model for success in Hong Kong’s dining industry has been to spawn one fantastic concept after another, as new kids on the block claim the zeitgeist in turn.

Without a big restaurant group name behind him, the number of ventures succeeding restaurateur Nikolai Smirnoff’s magic touch has steadily grown. The not-yet-30-year-old rising star first opened Momentai and Jo San in Sai Kung, before reaching down into the heart of Mong Kok to give Hong Kong one of its now-favourite soul food joints Graceland.

The casual demeanor of the restaurants belies the quality and boldness of the food, which Visa cardholders can now enjoy with a special offer this spring.

There’s no denying that Hong Kong has its own soul and character, whose epicenter lies squarely in the Yau Tsim Mong district. That’s where Smirnoff opened his third and perhaps most memorable venue Graceland amidst the throes of Covid-19.

Gritting its teeth through the pandemic, the three-year-old restaurant served weary Hong Kongers warm and hearty classic dishes from the American South. Smoked meats, baby back ribs, Philly cheesesteaks, fried chicken, collard greens, corn-on-the-cob and catfish are staples of the menu, whilst other soul favourites are offered seasonally and intermittently like seafood boils, tacos, Thanksgiving staples, even momos and Sri Lankan food.

Guests can also expect a lively, casual ambience. Named after Elvis Presley’s home in Memphis, Tennessee, one of the highlights of the restaurant is its 1960s-style jukebox which plays vinyl 45rpm records of Hong Kong’s old-school hits. The storefront is dominated by a window counter that can seat 18 people together on either side in a semi-al-fresco manner, perfect for big gatherings or for watching the hustle and bustle of Mong Kok district, all to the backdrop of full, lively music. Graceland is truly American soul, food and hospitality perfectly tuned for Hong Kong.
