Singapore has become a choice location for business in the economic powerhouse of Asia due to vital investments in continuously improving its already impressive infrastructure. A World Bank survey conducted last year reveals that Singapore has achieved the highest logistics performance index in the region.
Aligning its business with the Singapore government's stated goal of supporting foreign investment, Schenker Singapore's strategic investments over the years have contributed towards transforming and cementing the city state's reputation as a world-class logistics hub and regional distribution centre in Asia.
Harnessing strength from the collective DB Schenker group's global footprint and time-tested logistics expertise, Schenker Singapore plays a pivotal role in seamlessly bridging the West and the East.
Schenker Singapore was among the first European logistics service providers to serve Asia from Singapore. It has evolved into a trusted air and ocean freight services company with an extensive global coverage and best-in-class supply chain solutions. It is now one of the top air freight and ocean freight providers in Singapore in terms of volume and throughput.
"We strive to add value, enhancing the entire supply chain through innovation and customised solutions, integrated with our core air and ocean products. We endeavour to be the customers' first choice when it comes to logistics service providers," says Schenker Singapore's managing director, Charlie Kok.
Schenker Singapore represents one of the largest markets for DB Schenker when it comes to a single source for integrated freight and logistics services.
Despite the country being the smallest geographically, Schenker Singapore handles billions of dollars' worth of inventory for clients across many sectors in its hub at any point in time.
The company believes in the value and competitive edge that a logistics and supply chain can bring to customers. It continues to develop and strengthen its flexibility and ability to modify solutions for customers across a wide spectrum of industries and specialised vertical markets.
An early adopter of computerised warehousing, it acquired and further enhanced a leading warehouse management system that pushed the envelope in the logistics industry.
The Singapore-based information technology development team created many applications, including a just-in-time vendor managed inventory solution that supports top global blue-chip electronics and computer manufacturers, and a hospital inventory management system for the health care industry.
Schenker Singapore also consistently evaluates its business strategies, conceptualising and designing facilities to ensure maximum operational efficiency.
To date, the company has 12 facilities throughout Singapore with an impressive footprint of more than 2.3 million sq ft.
Six of these facilities are purpose-built logistics hubs, including its largest facility at Tampines LogisPark, the Megahub at the Airport Logistics Park of Singapore and the Healthcare Logistics Hub in Tuas Biomedical Park.
Aside from its initiatives in supporting Singapore's bid to become the region's distribution hub, Schenker Singapore is also recognised for its commitment to the environment. The company is a recipient of the Green Mark Platinum Award, the highest possible accolade from the Building and Construction Authority, for its development at the Tampines LogisPark facility.
Preparing itself for the continued influx of foreign investors in Asia, many of which have increasingly sophisticated requirements, Schenker Singapore has invested heavily in automation, such as the automated order fulfilment system at its Tampines LogisPark facility. These multimillion-dollar investments in automation systems will be fully operational by mid-2016, and will allow Schenker Singapore to scale up in handling higher volumes with increased reliability and less manpower.
"Asia-Pacific has become the main supplier and manufacturing base of the world, and this region has the highest growth potential in terms of consumption.
"We will continue strong bilateral collaboration with our network offices to support this growth, which will bring greater benefits to our customers," Kok says.
