Rare twins have been born to a Maasai giraffe in the Nairobi national park in Kenya.

"This is an extremely rare occurrence," says Najib Balala, the Kenyan wildlife minister.

The giraffe is the world's tallest species. There are only about 117,000 giraffe in the wild, says the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

Kenya is home to three species of giraffe: the Maasai, the reticulated and the Rothschild.

Nairobi National Park is just 7km from the heart of Nairobi, the Kenyan capital city. It is a tourist magnet for its wildlife including lions, leopards, rhinos and buffaloes.

Giraffes give birth while standing up, which means their calves fall about two metres to hit the ground when they are born. What a way to start your life!
