How students at HHCKLA Buddhist Leung Chik Wai College use Posties and Young Post to learn English

HHCKLA Buddhist Leung Chik Wai College in Tuen Mun has many activities that use Posties and Young Post to improve students’ English skills.

Display boards show the weekly newspapers with different topics such as Eye on China, STEM and Travel the World. Students would take the newspaper with them and “mail” their responses to teachers through a special postbox, said Mong Kin-yau, the school’s English panel chairman.

He said: “It’s so much fun that everyone is hungry for news.”

Students also take part in the English Bubble Picnic, where they discuss stories and fun facts from Posties. The event happens inside tents in the school hall. Participants enjoy snacks while practising English in a relaxing way.

“Those topics are relevant, engrossing to read and fascinating to discuss. That’s why we use Posties to arouse our students’ interest in reading and even speaking,” Mong added.

Last year, he organised a writing competition called Be a Little Journalist for students in Forms One and Two. They reported on shops and restaurants. Some paid a visit to a cat café in Tuen Mun while others wrote about D2 Place in Lai Chi Kok where they found eye-catching accessories.

Students made outstanding recommendations that were even published in Posties.

With the new version of Posties, Mong is excited to design even more activities that take English learning to the next level.
