The Olympic Games in Paris this summer were a triumph for France. Some 10,500 athletes turned up, representing 206 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. As always, the Games showcased the diversity of athletes worldwide and were a fitting testament to the human spirit and pursuit of excellence.

I watched the track and field events at the 80,000-seat Stade de France and the incredible atmosphere and camaraderie between athletes and their supporters across different cultures and countries were overwhelming, humbling and heartening.
The opening ceremony caused some controversy with a skit which some saw as a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” painting, drawing condemnation from some religious groups. But global audiences quickly focused on the intense competition and rivalry that followed.
A few incidents of controversy also occurred among athletes, including unsubstantiated cheating allegations in swimming, but these were expected, given the fierce competition. Generally, competitors showed strong support and respect for one other, reflecting the camaraderie built through regular competitions.
I travelled daily to the stadium in Saint-Denis via the Paris Metro alongside numerous locals and visitors. There was a noticeable yet reassuring security presence, and the atmosphere remained calm, showcasing the best of French hospitality.

Despite some safety concerns before my trip, I felt safe and welcomed in the French capital, whether strolling in the streets or using the metro. This welcoming atmosphere is crucial as nowhere else is the business and politics of sport on greater display than at the Olympics.
