Analysis | Questions swirl over future of Ukraine’s popular ‘Iron General’ after reports and denials he will be fired
- Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi has led Ukrainian armed forces through nearly two years of war
- His departure would be the most severe shake-up of Ukraine’s top military brass since the Russian invasion

For Ukrainian armed forces commander General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, even his status as national hero for leading the war effort against Moscow’s invading forces is not enough to quash questions over whether he will keep his job.
Russian state media delighted Wednesday at the reports, covering the story several times during the flagship discussion programme 60 Minutes on the Russia 1 television channel as well as during news bulletins on the news channel Russia 24.
A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday that ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi had been offered Zaluzhnyi’s job but turned it down.

The Ukrainian General Staff and president’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the approach to Syrskyi.
