French farmers furious after government flies in female bear to repopulate the Pyrenees
Shepherds say they are concerned the animal will eat their sheep and other livestock
French authorities helicoptered a Slovenian she-bear into the Pyrenees mountains on Thursday, despite an all-night protest by furious local farmers who fear she will eat their sheep.
One female bear “in perfect health” was released on Thursday morning, to be joined soon by a second, the environment ministry said.
“We saw the helicopter over Etsaut. It was hovering and let down a cage,” said Olivier Maurin, a local sheep farmer and organiser of the anti-bear protest.
The latest skirmish in the “bear war” came after Environment Minister François de Rugy insisted the government would not back down in its bid to boost biodiversity by reintroducing bears to the area.
Around 40 brown bears now roam the range between France and Spain after France began importing them from Slovenia in 1996. The native population had been hunted to near-extinction.
