Nobel Chemistry Prize 2023: trio win for quantum dots used in LED TVs, solar panels after winners’ names leaked
- Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov won for ‘the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots’, used in LED TV screens, solar panels and in medicine
- The announcement came after the academy appeared to have inadvertently published the names of the scientists it said had won this year’s prize in chemistry

Scientists Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for “the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” the award-giving body said on Wednesday.
The prize “rewards the discovery and development of quantum dots, nanoparticles so tiny that their size determines their properties,” the academy said.
“These smallest components of nanotechnology now spread their light from televisions and LED lamps, and can also guide surgeons when they remove tumour tissue, among many other things.”
Earlier on Wednesday, the academy appeared to have inadvertently published the names of the three scientists it said had won this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Bawendi is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Brus is professor emeritus at Columbia University and Ekimov works for Nanocrystals Technology Inc.
