Chinese woman pregnant with 9 embryos loses them all due to serious infection

Heartbroken mother-to-be says she only ‘sees complete darkness’ after losing babies she had been trying to conceive for so long

A woman in China who was carrying nine fetuses and underwent surgery to remove seven of them in November has lost the remaining two babies after suffering a serious infection.

The 25-year-old from Nanchang of Jiangxi province, eastern China, trended in the country last year, Jiupai News reported.

Doctors suggested she go under the knife to abort seven of the fetuses at a total cost of 40,000 yuan (US$5,400).

The woman, surnamed Hou, was discharged from hospital at the end of November, with the remaining two embryos developing healthily, doctors said.

But on January 6, during a prenatal check-up, the expectant mother was found to have developed a cervical infection and her amniotic water broke.
