The woman, identified only by her first name Yating, said she spent three days drawing the calligraphy on plain white curtains, news website Xi Bu Jue Ce reported.

The resident of Quanzhou in China’s eastern Fujian province said she made the calligraphy curtains to replace the previous ones which had cartoon pictures and were not suitable for the style of her home.

By the window of her room is a desk on which she put “four treasures of intellectuals’ study in ancient time” – a writing brush, ink, paper and inkstones, which matched with the calligraphy-themed curtains.

Not everyone was impressed by the curtains: “This woman’s curtains really make me horrified”, says one social media user who drew comparisons with funeral banners. Photo: The Paper

The new curtains are not ordinary cloth or paper as some people assumed, but made of thin etamines, a loosely woven mesh-like fabric, according to Yating.

“The etamine is quite thin, so I have to be careful not to let my brush soak too much ink; otherwise, the ink would diffuse to a wide area,” she said.
