A long-serving funeral home worker in Thailand has caused shock online after revealing that he collected gold teeth left behind in ashes after cremations and melted them down into gold bars.
The unidentified man is from Saraburi province in central Thailand and has worked in a graveyard for many years.
The site is where many Thai-Chinese families bury their dead.
Recently, the worker took more than 10 small gold nuggets to a local gold shop for testing and appraisal, according to the Thai news outlet The Thaiger.
He said that the gold pieces had been collected from the cremated remains of the deceased throughout his working life

The man insisted that all the gold was “legally obtained with the full knowledge and consent of the families”, adding that he intended to use part of the proceeds to make merit on behalf of the deceased.
He said that after the cremation process, the remains often include ashes, bone fragments, and occasionally pieces of gold.
Most families, he said, no longer wished to keep the gold and would give it to the undertakers.
Since he was unsure whether the material was genuine gold, he sought professional verification from a well-known gold shop in Saraburi, and consulted the shop’s owner, identified as Namo.
On April 25, the incident came to light via a trending video on social media posted by the gold shop owner, identified online as namobanchangtongdaengso0, who has more than 830,000 followers on the platform.
In the video, Namo uses an X-ray device to inspect each piece and confirms that all of them are genuine gold.
He even holds up a gold-filled dental piece to the camera and repeatedly says: “This is mostly from teeth. This is from the teeth of a corpse. Look, this is from the teeth of a corpse.”

The final appraisal estimated the total value of the gold at 59,371 baht (US$1,800), which was eventually melted down into a 21.13-gram gold bar.
The video, which had attracted almost 14,000 likes at the time of writing, has sparked a heated discussion online.
One online observer said: “Gold is expensive now, so you can get a lot. Congratulations, uncle.”
Another person chimed in: “Uncle must have done good deeds his whole life. It is a job many people would not dare to do. I believe the deceased and their families would be happy to let him have it.”
