Cathay Pacific Airways will launch a non-stop service between Hong Kong and the US city of Dallas next year, while also stepping up the number of flights to Canada amid the company’s further expansion of its North American network.
The flag carrier announced on Tuesday it would also add to its popular Canada routes, taking the number of daily Vancouver return flights to two and weekly round-trip Toronto services to 13 by May.
Cathay Pacific chief customer and commercial officer Lavinia Lau Hoi-zee said the new Dallas route, the company’s sixth destination in the US and its eighth in North America, would give passengers better access to a host of other locations.
“Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is one of the world’s busiest airports. With our Cathay Pacific code-shares as well as other flight options, customers can connect to over 190 domestic destinations in the United States, as well as 11 destinations in Central and South America via [the Dallas airport],” she said.
The route will begin operating on April 24.
Lau said the service expansion could further enhance the city’s connectivity with North America and countries of the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing’s push to link economies across Asia, Europe, Africa and South America into a China-centred trade network.
Dallas’ airport was the third busiest in the world in terms of passenger traffic last year, according to Airports Council International.


Cathay will deploy Airbus A350-1000 aircraft to operate four return flights a week on the route.
Flights will run on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the Dallas-bound flight taking around 15 hours and the return service about an hour longer.
Cathay’s website showed a week-long round trip departing on April 24 on the direct service would cost HK$12,928 (US$1,660) per person in economy class, HK$20,778 in premium economy and HK$61,848 in business, including taxes and charges. No first class fares are available.
Direct flights were cheaper than those with connections on the same day.
For example, a round trip with one stopover in Los Angeles cost HK$13,143 per person in economy class, HK$20,993 in premium economy and HK$62,063 in business. The indirect flight takes 18 hours and 9 minutes.
The direct service will add to the 88 return flights already operating between Hong Kong and the carrier’s North American destinations: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver.
The company said it aimed to increase the number of weekly return flights to the continent to 108 by May, running three return flights per day to New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles respectively, and a daily return service to Boston and Chicago.

Cathay will also offer two daily return flights to Vancouver and 13 weekly round-trip services to Toronto.
Direct flights to Washington have yet to be resumed.
The carrier will step up its North America cargo operations, running five extra return freight services per week from this month, bringing the total number of weekly flights to 37.
A source said the expansion was partly driven by Cathay’s decision to fly over parts of Russian airspace amid the Ukraine-Russia war, giving it an edge over many overseas airlines which were suffering from the added costs of avoiding the area on long-haul routes.
Cathay is the only airline currently offering direct flights between Hong Kong and US eastern seaboard.
The airline aims to restore 100 per cent of pre-pandemic passenger capacity by the first quarter of next year.
