Hong Kong divers to scour sea for dashcam of vehicle that plunged off bridge
Police hope video can provide clues on how SUV driven by customs officer tumbled over railing of Shenzhen Bay Bridge and fell into waters below
Hong Kong police divers will try to recover the dashcam of a vehicle that skidded off a bridge to Shenzhen and fell dozens of metres down to the waters below, in hopes video will provide vital clues to how the fatal accident happened.
The driver, a customs officer heading to work, was pulled alive from the wreckage hours later and taken to hospital, but he died early on Tuesday morning. The accident was the most serious yet on the Shenzhen Bay Bridge, which opened in 2007.
After working in difficult conditions through the night, the force brought in a barge-mounted crane to haul the white Toyota sports utility vehicle from the water shortly after midday. Two of its wheels were missing and its four doors were twisted out of shape.
The vehicle was loaded onto the barge and taken to the marine police base in Tuen Mun. It will later be sent to the force’s vehicle impound yard in Tai Lam Chung to undergo extensive analysis, according to police.
A source familiar with the matter said officers failed to find the dashcam amid the debris and wreckage, adding it likely broke off and fell into the sea during the vehicle’s fall.
“[The dashcam] is the key clue that could help investigators to determine what happened,” the insider said.
