Water gushed out from a wall in Hong Kong’s Cheung Tsing Tunnel on Saturday, leading to the temporary shutdown of two lanes after a medium goods vehicle crashed and ruptured a section of the structure’s inner pipes.

Police said two Kowloon-bound lanes of the tunnel were closed for about 2½ hours from 1.15pm following the traffic incident.

The two lanes were reopened at about 2.40pm but were subsequently closed again to tow away the damaged truck.

Police eventually re-opened both lanes to all traffic shortly before 6pm.

The male driver suffered mild injuries and was sent to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung for treatment.

The 1.6km (1 mile) Cheung Tsing Tunnel is Hong Kong’s first three-lane twin tube tunnel connecting to Cheung Tsing Bridge and Cheung Tsing Highway.
