Hundreds of passengers were evacuated from a Hong Kong railway station on Saturday after a fire broke out on a platform, with train services between Tiu Keng Leng and Kwun Tong suspended for more than two hours.

A police source said a minor fire was reported at Yau Tong station, an interchange point for the Tseung Kwan O and Kwun Tong lines. “But the fire has been extinguished and nobody was injured,” he said.

Rail operator MTR Corporation said staff found smoke pouring from a screen door on the platform on the line heading in the direction of Whampoa at 1.05pm, prompting the workers to immediately alert the control centre and police.

The company said the station was shut down and it had arranged a shuttle bus service for passengers travelling between Kwun Tong and Yau Tong stations.

The station reopened at 2.30pm. An MTR Corp spokesman said an initial investigation had shown that the platform screen door in the station had malfunctioned.

Trains running between Kwun Tong and Whampoa at one point were running at four-minute intervals due to the incident and only resumed normal service shortly before 3.40pm.
