Mourners in Hong Kong have gathered at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to commemorate Pope Francis a day after his death, with some describing him as a “breath of fresh air” and noting his empathy towards those who felt “unseen”.

The Post observed about a dozen people at the cathedral in Central at around 1pm on Tuesday, with most seated in silence or prayer, while others signed a condolence book near the altar. Several were also seen weeping quietly.

Members of the public will be able to visit and pay their respects between 7am and 7pm every day until Saturday. The condolence service on the final day will end at 4pm.

The Catholic diocese of Hong Kong also told its 400,000 worshippers that the cathedral would host a requiem mass on Monday next week at 8pm.

A message in the cathedral’s condolence book was signed “Stephen Chow” and read: “I am dearly missing you”. Cardinal Stephen Chow Sau-yan is the city’s top Catholic priest.

The message asked the pope to “please pray for the world and the church” in heaven.
