Hongkongers should brace for severe squally thunderstorms this weekend, with temperatures expected to fall as a cold front approaches, the local forecaster has said.

The Observatory said temperatures would drop from 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 Fahrenheit) on Friday to as low as 18 degrees on Saturday and 17 degrees the next day.

A trough of low pressure currently over central China would develop into a cold front on Saturday, moving across the coastal areas of Guangdong province later that day, it said.

“[The cold front] will bring showers and severe squally thunderstorms over Guangdong,” the Observatory said.

Saturday’s weather will be cloudy with occasional showers, and some areas will experience heavier downpours and squally thunderstorms. Winds will strengthen from the north in the afternoon.
