A worker fell from a ladder in Hong Kong’s Happy Valley on Monday morning and later died in hospital, triggering an investigation by police and the Labour Department.
Police said the 58-year-old worker was using a wooden ladder to repair an air conditioner on the rooftop of a flat on Wilson Road in Jardine’s Lookout at 10.30am.
But he accidentally fell from about 1.5 metres (4.9 feet), injuring his head and passing out.
He was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai for treatment, but was confirmed dead soon after.
Police are investigating the cause of the fall.
The Labour Department said it had immediately deployed staff to the scene upon receiving a report of the accident and it was also investigating.
The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims contacted the family to offer help.
The association learned that the man had no long-term illnesses and was the sole provider for his family. He is survived by his wife and daughter, who is in her third year at a tertiary institution.
The workers’ rights group said the pair were deeply saddened by the sudden death and did not know how they would cover their living costs and education expenses. The man co-owned an air-conditioning engineering business with a friend.
“We would like to remind workers again that ladders are only used for ascending or descending,” the group said. “If workers need to work off the ground, they need to deploy a working platform to reduce occupational safety hazards.”
Last month, a 67-year-old painter was suspected to have fallen from a work ladder and was found dead on the rooftop of a building in Shek Kong Barracks. She had been working as a painter for nearly 40 years.
In August 2023, a 74-year-old renovation company boss fell from a 1.5-metre-high ladder while dismantling a canopy from an exterior wall in residential estate Windsor Park in Kau To Shan. He was rushed to a hospital, but did not survive.
A 36-year-old male renovation worker died after he lost his footing while climbing a wooden ladder to replace a light bulb and fell from a building to the ground at Hung Shui Kiu’s Park Nara estate in March 2021.
In February 2021, a 50-year-old worker fell from a ladder and landed on a canopy in Sun Tin Wai Estate, Sha Tin, while repairing pipes on the 10th floor.
