Hong Kong authorities say sorry to Tung Chung residents after 12-hour water outage
Supply was originally expected to be restored at 6am on Monday, before it was pushed back to 7am, then 8am and eventually 10am
Hong Kong authorities have apologised after a 12-hour water outage in Tung Chung affected tens of thousands of residents and hotel guests, and disrupted operations at restaurants and schools.
Supply was mostly restored at 10.07am on Monday, according to the Water Supplies Department. It was originally expected to come back on at 6am, before it was pushed back to 7am, then 8am and eventually 10am.
But district councillors said about 1,200 households at Yu Tai Court still had no water supply as of 7.30pm, while tenants on the top floors of another estate had also complained of low water pressure.
The department said its staff would “immediately follow up”, adding that while the number of households without water was not immediately known, it was not expected to be a widespread problem.
“The water supply network involved this time is very big. So it takes some time for supply to fully resume for all households in the network,” it said.
Government workers began the race to fix a burst 1.2-metre (3.9-foot) diameter pipe at Cheung Tung Road near Siu Ho Wan Water Treatment Works on Sunday night, with the incident leaving residents without drinking or flushing water.
