Singapore Airlines has confirmed it removed an elderly passenger from a flight at Hong Kong airport for “repeatedly verbally abusing” crew members before take-off and turned him over to authorities.
A spokesman for the carrier told the Post on Saturday that a passenger on board Singapore-bound flight SQ897 on Tuesday was handed over to authorities at Hong Kong International Airport.
“After repeatedly verbally abusing the cabin crew on board, our pilots assessed the situation and decided to offload the passenger to ensure the safety of the other passengers and the operating crew,” the Singapore Airlines (SIA) spokesman said.
“The safety of our customers and staff is always our top priority. SIA believes that all our employees have a right to a safe and respectful workplace environment, and does not stand for abusive behaviour towards our staff.”
The airline apologised to all customers on board the flight for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
A video posted by Singaporean media on Friday showed the male passenger confronting the chief stewardess, who responded calmly.
Hong Kong police said they received a report at 10.25pm on Tuesday about a passenger on board a Singapore Airlines flight who had clashed with cabin crew members.
The force said the incident involved a 71-year-old Singaporean man and had been listed as a “request for police assistance”. No arrests were made following investigations.
According to data from flight-tracking website flightradar24.com, SQ897 was initially scheduled to take off at 8.25pm, but the Airbus A350 only left the boarding gate at around 10pm.
The aircraft headed towards the runway then turned back on the tarmac and stopped for more than an hour on the apron before finally taking off at 11.38pm. The flight landed in Singapore at 2.48am on Wednesday.
Video footage showed the man being escorted off the aircraft with another passenger and then being surrounded by Hong Kong police officers.
The man had reportedly asked for alcoholic drinks before the plane took off.
A passenger who reportedly witnessed the man scolding the crew and the chief stewardess said he was offensive but the staff endured his insults.
