Gregory Charles Rivers, an Australian actor who starred in Hong Kong TV dramas, was found dead in an apparent suicide at his home in Clear Water Bay on Friday.
The Cantonese-speaking star, who was 58, became a household name in the city after portraying a number of roles in TV dramas over three decades.
Police found Rivers’ body at his house in Tai Au Mun Village next to a tray with burning charcoal on Friday night, after receiving a report from his family. No suicide note was found at the scene.
According to media reports, the actor’s wife Bonnie Cheung died a few months ago.
Born in 1965 in Australia, Rivers studied medicine at the University of New South Wales, where he befriended students from Hong Kong and discovered Cantopop.
He taught himself Cantonese using cassette tapes and volunteered as a chauffeur for the late superstar Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing and Cantopop icon Alan Tam Wing-lun when they performed in Australia in the 1980s.
