Hong Kong to allow electric hoverboards, unicycles on designated cycling tracks under proposal by transport authorities
- Devices will be allowed on certain tracks alongside e-bicycles and e-scooters if legislature approves legal amendments
- Transport Department suggests assigning QR codes to devices to ensure compliance with requirements
Electric hoverboards and unicycles will be allowed on designated tracks in Hong Kong, alongside e-bicycles and e-scooters, under legal amendments proposed by transport authorities.
The new details, in a paper submitted to the legislature by the Transport Department on Monday for a discussion on Friday, also suggested assigning QR codes to the devices to ensure compliance with regulations. Anyone caught violating rules under the latest arrangements could face a fine of up to HK$25,000 (US$3,190).
“The government has always adopted an open attitude towards green and innovative transport, while attaching great importance to road safety,” the department said, adding relevant laws would be amended accordingly later this year.
The proposed QR codes would link to the device’s registration, proving it fulfilled all requirements.
Details such as which body will certify the devices and which batteries will be recognised are still under discussion between the department and the Hong Kong Productivity Council.
