Hong Kong government plans to build 9,000 public housing flats on land near Kam Sheung Road MTR station
- Three plots of land next to railway station could house about 25,200 people by 2026, Housing Department says
- But pro-democracy district councillor Keith Au opposes the project, saying it would demolish local village and farmland
Three plots of land next to a railway station in the New Territories could give Hong Kong about 9,000 public housing flats by 2026, an official document has revealed.
This would be the biggest public housing estate after the Kai Tak airport area development, which plans to provide 12,600 public flats by using seven sites that were earlier primed for private developments.
In a paper submitted to the Yuen Long District Council, the Housing Department said the three sites could provide 9,000 affordable flats, housing about 25,200 people.
The sites, including 21 blocks, are located next to the Kam Sheung Road MTR station and public transport terminal. Two primary schools would also be built along with a basketball court, a badminton court, and open spaces.
The project involves resumption of 12.5 hectares (about 31 acres) of private land and 9.2 hectares (22.7 acres) of government land. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and completed in phases in 2026.
