Some 31.9 per cent of registered voters cast their ballots in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council election on Sunday, surpassing the record low turnout four years ago in a poll held just over a week after the deadly blaze in Tai Po.

While the turnout rate increased by 1.7 percentage points, the total number of registered voters who cast their ballot dropped by 33,000 compared with 2021 in the second Legco poll held under Beijing’s “patriots-only” electoral overhaul.

Votes counting was under way overnight, with the results suggesting that four incumbents lost their seats and new faces are making their way into the 90-strong legislature.

Follow our live updates from the central counting station at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Here are some quick takes:

  • Four incumbents, Kwok Wai-keung of the Federation of Trade Unions (FTU), fellow party member Luk Chung-hung, Frankie Ngan Man-yu of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) and his party colleague, Edmund Wong Chun-sek, lost their seats

  • Judy Chan Kapui of the New People’s Party has secured the Hong Kong Island West seat vacated by her party chairwoman, Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee

  • Olympic gold medallist Vivian Kong Man-wai won in her maiden bid

  • District councillor Christine Fong Kwok-shan has finally won a seat after five failed election bids
