Head of Chinese University of Hong Kong ‘evading’ lawmakers over ruling council revamp plans
- Legislators attack veteran academic Rocky Tuan after he misses three Legco bills committee sessions on bid to increase outside representation on university council
- One Legco member says: ‘I hope that Tuan can come here to clarify our doubts about his governance’
University vice-chancellor Rocky Tuan Sung-chi came under fire on Friday as the Legco bills committee ended its examination of a private members’ bill designed to make sure external appointees dominated the council.
Tuan was absent for the third time from the bills committee sessions, on the grounds of illness, which sparked speculation by some lawmakers that he might not be capable of leading the university.
“It seems that the vice-chancellor has kept evading this Legco meeting … The Legco is not some kind of a savage beast,” lawmaker Reverend Peter Koon Ho-ming said. “I hope that Tuan can come here to clarify our doubts about his governance.”
“I don’t understand why the vice-chancellor is always absent whenever he needs to attend a Legco meeting. If he is really that sick, is he fit and capable for leading the university as its vice-chancellor?” Lawmaker Dennis Leung Tsz-wing asked.
