Hypocrites and robots: Hong Kong lawmaker slams pro-establishment camp after losing vote calling for legislature to hold own hearings on rail scandal
- Civic Party lawmaker vents frustration after motion to investigate Sha Tin to Central line is voted down
- Result came despite transport minister admitting the HK$97.1 billion project had been poorly managed
Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmaker Tanya Chan has blasted pro-establishment rivals as hypocritical robots after they voted down a motion to investigate the scandal-hit Sha Tin to Central rail line, despite the city’s transport minister admitting the HK$97.1 billion (US$12.4 million) project had been poorly managed.
Thursday’s proposal from the Civic Party lawmaker was the fourth time the pro-democracy camp has called for the Legislative Council to hold its own hearings into the scandal, even though a commission of inquiry is ongoing.
Afterwards, in response to a question about what she thought of the pro-government lawmakers who voted against the motion, Chan said they were “hypocrites”.
“They may be scolding the government in their speeches, but they vote in a robotic manner,” she said.
The motion had called for Legco to set up a select committee with the power to summon witnesses and request documents from companies and individuals involved.
