Police crackdown on Hong Kong buses and taxis sees 1,300 tickets issued for driving offences

Citywide operation targets poor driving among those behind wheel of public service vehicles

More than 1,400 court summonses or penalty tickets have been issued to motorists in a citywide police crackdown on traffic violations since Saturday.

The five-day operation targeted public service vehicles including taxis, buses, minibuses and school buses as part of a series of ongoing road safety enforcement operations by police.

Winding up the crackdown on Wednesday, police said 132 summonses and 1,308 fixed penalty tickets had been issued.

Some 177 of those were for seat belt offences, 138 for speeding, 41 were for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, and nine were issued for failing to comply with traffic signals.

The operation also yielded the arrest of a taxi driver for suspected overcharging.
