A former principal of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta molested his students on the pretext he was imparting breathing techniques to them during flute lessons, the District Court heard yesterday.

Flautist Chan Kwok-chiu, 56, admitted molesting four pupils, aged 12 to 14, when he taught them the flute at their primary schools between 2013 and last year.

The court heard that Chan would place his hands on some of the girls’ bellies, saying he needed to coach them on how to breathe. He would then slowly move his hands up to the girls’ breasts.

The musician, who was with the orchestra from 1990 to 1997, pleaded guilty to seven counts of indecent assault and one of indecent conduct towards a child under the age of 16 on Monday.

The court heard that in an interview with police, Chan said he had begun holding flute lessons at a school in Kowloon Tong in 2005 after being introduced by a friend.

Two years later, he became the teacher of one of the victims, 14, and molested her for the first time when he began teaching her on a one-on-one basis at the school in 2013.

He did it on a momentary impulse as the victim was pretty and wore a skirt, he told officers, admitting he had also touched the girl’s breasts and buttocks on various occasions.
