Mysterious markings outside Hong Kong housing estate flats raise burglary worries
Hundreds of units across city are involved, prompting a criminal probe and enhanced patrols
Mysterious markings left on the walls outside hundreds of flats at more than six housing estates across the city have prompted police to launch a criminal investigation and enhance their patrols.
The findings raised concerns among residents who worried that their flats were targeted by burglars for raids.
On Friday, police said there was no evidence to indicate the markings involved criminal elements.

Police were treating the cases as “miscellaneous inquiries”. But detectives from the New Territories South regional crime unit were assigned to monitor them.
Last night, detectives pored over security camera footage to identify who left the markings and whether the cases were linked.
Suspicious markings were first found outside 148 flats in two public housing blocks of Kwai Luen Estate in Kwai Chung after police received a report from a resident at about 5pm on Wednesday.
Residents said a red dot or red line, drawn in marker pen, was found near the flats’ doorbells.
In response, the estate’s housing manager Ng Kwong-keung said: “We have enhanced security around the estate and police have also stepped up patrol in the area.”
