Key trade associations in Hong Kong have played down the impact of the competition law on their work and dealings with member companies.

According to the Competition Commission, the principal authority responsible for enforcing the Competition Ordinance, exchange of information and activities of trade associations may fall within the remit of the rules that aim to combat anti-competitive business practices.

But in a reply to the , the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce said it would continue to share industry information with members as long as the information provided was "general, aggregated and anonymised".

It said it believed such information should be compliant with the new law.

The chamber said it had issued a code of conduct to its members over interactions with the trade body. The chamber has also promoted educational material issued by the commission on compliance with the law.

Another major trade body, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, said it had been in constant communication with members over the law, adding that the commission's experts had explained its enforcement policy to members.

The Federation of Hong Kong Industries said it was fully aware of the importance of complying with the provisions of the ordinance and its members had been kept abreast of the latest information concerning the ordinance.
