A former Hong Kong police officer is facing 30 counts of bribery and fraud after he was previously charged by the city’s anti-corruption agency with accepting an unauthorised loan from someone linked to an investigation.

Magistrate Frances Leung Nga-yan on Friday approved an application by prosecutors to charge 50-year-old Mak Kwok-hung with the extra counts upon receipt of further legal advice from the Department of Justice.

The defendant is a former member of the Central police district’s investigation team.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) said the extra charges included a count of accepting an advantage as a public servant, one count of an agent using a document with intent to deceive his principal and 28 counts of fraud.

One of the charges involved allegations that Mak, as a police constable at the time, had accepted a bribe of HK$100,000 (US$12,900) between July 2021 and August 2023 from an investment scam victim for providing help and internal information, it said.

Twenty-eight of the charges allege that the defendant had not disclosed his outstanding debts to the Hong Kong Police Credit Union and 13 financial institutions between December 2017 and April 2023.
