Hong Kong customs seizes Singapore-bound contraband goods worth HK$10 million
Appliances, clothing found in suspicious container declared as carrying two private cars and a smaller amount of electronic goods

Hong Kong customs officers have seized about HK$10 million (US$1.3 million) worth of smuggled home appliances, electronics and clothing from a shipping container bound for Singapore.
The Customs and Excise Department said on Tuesday that its officers earlier this month inspected a suspicious container intended to travel on an ocean-going vessel from Hong Kong to Singapore.
“Customs inspected a container that was declared as carrying two private cars and 240 pieces of electronic products on March 16,” it said.
“Upon examination, customs officers found a large batch of suspected smuggled goods, including refrigerators, tablets, mobile phones and clothing, in the container. Additionally, the quantity of electronic products seized exceeded the declared quantity.”
The seized goods were estimated to have a market value of about HK$10 million.
Customs said investigations were ongoing. It did not rule out the possibility of arrests being made in connection with the case.
