A tourist reported to the force at about 7pm on Thursday that her wallet was stolen while she was sightseeing on The Peak and her credit cards were used to buy goods worth HK$16,000 (US$2,050) in total.

“After an in-depth investigation going through vast amounts of CCTV footage, the police identified and arrested two core members of a theft syndicate the day after on February 7,” Inspector Ha Man-yi of the Central district crime squad said on Saturday.

The two foreign passport holders, aged 41 and 44, were arrested over theft and obtaining property by deception.

During a search of the hostel where the suspects were staying, officers found other handbags and wallets, as well as clothing the two men wore when they allegedly committed the crimes.
