A primary school teacher, a nurse and a professional driver were among 14 men arrested for illegal street racing in Hong Kong as police revved up enforcement efforts ahead of the annual Macau Grand Prix.

The operation spanned the past two months and also resulted in 14 cars being impounded so police could check for any potentially illegal modifications.

Police said some of the cars were recorded travelling at 135km/h (84mph) on narrow and winding sections that had a 50km/h speed limit, while repeatedly crossing double white lines around bends on Route Twisk.

The 14 men, aged 20 to 33, were detained for illegal racing and driving without third-party insurance. They included a primary school teacher, a nurse, and a professional driver.

The suspects had all been released on bail and were required to report to police later this month.

“Police want to take this occasion to sternly condemn these drivers. These illegal racing activities not only endanger other road users but are also a major factor behind serious accidents,” Chief Inspector Charles Ng Hing-cheong of the New Territories North traffic unit said.

Police have said some of the impounded cars reached 157km/h in an 80km/h zone. Photo: Sam Tsang
