Hong Kong police have arrested an engineer for allegedly strangling his 46-year-old girlfriend at her flat in a dispute over a love triangle.
The 43-year-old was apprehended after his girlfriend, who was also his colleague, was found dead at her Wah Kay House flat on Tsz Wan Shan’s Yuk Wah Crescent on Saturday.
Chief Inspector Chow Chun-pong of the Wong Tai Sin police district’s crime unit on Monday said a preliminary investigation suggested the pair had argued about their relationship before a struggle took place at her flat last Tuesday evening.
“During the struggle, the man used his hands to grip the woman’s neck for a few minutes. It was alleged that the woman lost her ability to breathe at that time,” Chow said.
“To cover up the incident, the man took her mobile phone and impersonated her by using her social media to request leave from her supervisor.”
The suspect was believed to have then thrown the mobile phone into the waters near the North Point Ferry Pier, he added.
Senior Inspector Lam Ying-pan of the Wong Tai Sin district crime squad said an initial investigation suggested the pair had argued about a possible love triangle.
According to the force, the couple had known each other for about 10 years and had been in a romantic relationship for around a year.
The Post has learned that the suspect is a married man with children while the victim was a divorcee.
A police source said the man suspected the woman had a new boyfriend.
The case came to light on Saturday when the man sought help from the manager of the company where the couple worked, claiming the woman had been out of contact since the previous Wednesday.
The company contacted her family afterwards.
The victim’s elder brother and sister went to her flat to look for her on Saturday afternoon but no one answered the door. The brother then called a locksmith to help them gain access.
They found the 46-year-old dead in a bedroom and called police at around 6.45pm on Saturday.
The chief inspector said the victim had bruising around her left eye and collarbone, and there were abnormal blood spots on her face.

The source said crime squad officers were tasked with investigating.
Chow said the results of a postmortem exam carried out on Monday showed she had died from suffocation.
“After conducting an extensive investigation and reviewing surveillance camera footage, police found the explanation given by her boyfriend to be suspicious,” he said.
“Police arrested him for murder on Sunday.”
The suspect was still being held for questioning as of Monday afternoon.
Detectives from the Wong Tai Sin district crime squad have launched a further investigation.
Separately, police arrested five people on Sunday on suspicion of killing a 33-year-old man who was struck on the head with a hammer more than 10 times on Pilkem Street in Yau Ma Tei.
Police said they believed a dispute in a love triangle had triggered the attack.
The city recorded eight reports of homicide in the first five months of this year, three cases fewer than the 11 recorded in the same period in 2023.
