Hong Kong condemns Taiwanese authorities for issuing travel warning over city
- Taiwanese authorities earlier warned residents after some tourists from self-ruled island reported being stopped and searched by local police
Hong Kong’s Security Bureau has condemned Taiwanese authorities for issuing a travel warning over Hong Kong, rebuking claims of tourists from the self-ruled island being stopped and searched for no apparent reason as a “scaremongering” political tactic.
A bureau spokesman said on Wednesday the government “strongly condemned” Taiwan, which it said was attempting to “smear” Hong Kong “under the pretext of a so-called travel advice”.
“Such political manoeuvres with fact-twisting, scaremongering and panic-spreading remarks are strongly deplored,” he told the Post.
He added accusations of police conducting frequent stop and search actions were “far from the truth”.
Such operations were “conducted strictly in accordance with the law and [were] in no way based on a person’s nationality, race or appearance”.
Taiwanese authorities on Tuesday issued a statement asking residents to exercise increased caution when travelling to Hong Kong after some tourists from the self-ruled island reported being stopped and searched by local police for no apparent reason.
