A Hong Kong senior police inspector was on Thursday warned he could face jail time for two indecent assaults on a pregnant saleswoman and perverting the course of justice by offering his victim and her husband HK$1 million (US$127,824) to buy their silence.

Magistrate Frances Leung Nga-yan said the woman had told the truth when she gave evidence at Kowloon City Court that Lee Cheuk-yin, who denied the charges, had forcibly kissed her on the lips, grabbed her breast and that she had shouted at him to try to make him stop.

“Immediate imprisonment is definitely in the court’s consideration,” Leung told Lee, 34.

The court earlier heard that Lee was a regular customer at the victim’s shop, where model cars were among the items sold.

Lee told the court he was trying to look at a model car on a shelf above the victim in the break room of the store on November 23, 2021 and accidentally touched her when he tried to swing away from her hand because he was irritated by the woman asking him to buy more.

Leung pointed out that the victim’s evidence was key because the break room was not covered by the store’s security cameras.
