- Wong Chun-yeung, nicknamed Sheep, 28, is accused of pretending to be woman’s son in a phone conversation, claiming he had been arrested and requiring bail money
- Wong, now unemployed, won a seat in the Islands District Council in the 2019 election which ended in a landslide victory for the opposition
A former Hong Kong opposition politician accused of cheating an elderly woman out of HK$100,000 (US$12,750) in a phone scam was on Thursday remanded in custody.
Ex-district councillor Wong Chun-yeung, nicknamed Sheep, 28, was escorted to Kwun Tong Court to face a charge of obtaining property by deception.
A charge sheet available for inspection by the press said Wong had deceived Chan Shui-chun of the cash by pretending to be her son in a conversation on May 30.
“[He] claimed he was arrested for a case of assault and required HK$100,000 as bail money,” the document said.
Acting principal magistrate Cheang Kei-hong adjourned the case for 16 weeks pending further police investigation. He rejected Wong’s bail application after the prosecution raised an objection.
Wong is expected to return to court in late September.
