Hong Kong customs officers have confiscated nearly HK$2 million (US$256,210) worth of dried abalone from a truck at the city’s border checkpoint before it could be smuggled into mainland China to meet the demands of the festive season.
The Shenzhen-bound haul was found in a truck intercepted for inspection at the Lok Ma Chau control point on Monday, according to the Customs and Excise Department.
The department on Tuesday said the cross-border vehicle was declared to be carrying soft drinks, biscuits and dried sea cucumber.
“The batch of suspected smuggled dried abalone weighing about 30kg was seized [from the vehicle],” its spokesman said. The haul had an estimated street value of HK $1.95 million.
The 50-year-old truck driver is helping with the investigation. Customs officers are also determining the source and final destination of the goods.
