Police have seized HK$230 million (US$29 million) worth of meth and arrested a young jobless man during a major drug bust in an industrial area in northern Hong Kong.
The 24-year-old man was intercepted by police in an industrial building on San On Street in Tuen Mun on Monday morning. Officers seized 2.1kg of crystal meth, also known as Ice, from a paper bag he was allegedly carrying.
The suspect was escorted into one of the flats in the same building, where officers confiscated 332kg of crystal meth and 150kg of liquid meth, along with a large quantity of chemicals and packaging equipment such as electronic scales.
Chief Inspector Tai Po-yee of the New Territories North regional crime unit on Tuesday said an initial investigation suggested the unit had been used as a drug storage facility and packaging centre for about three months.
“We believe the chemicals, including soda powder and preservative, were used to turn liquid meth into crystal meth ,” she said.
She added that the haul had an estimated street value of HK$230 million.
