Hong Kong police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of money laundering and frozen HK$450,000 (US$58,028) raised through an online platform claiming to help those who had fled the city after their involvement in anti-government protests.

Superintendent Swalikh Mohammed from the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau said the man was suspected of managing the fundraising platform that had raised HK$630,000 since September.

He said the fund was purportedly used to assist people who were active in the protests that erupted last year in opposition to the now-withdrawn extradition bill, and had later fled Hong Kong.

The evidence suggested “the money is used otherwise”, the superintendent said, adding that police suspected the fundraising activity involved deception and money laundering.

He said officers were investigating whether the fund raised through the platform was used for personal gain.
