Hong Kong police arrested three local men and seized HK$11million (US$1.4 million) worth of illegal drugs on Sunday in an anti-narcotics raid in Sheung Shui.

The stash of drugs, which amounted to 10.6kg of cocaine and 15 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or Ice, was discovered in two flats in two different buildings on the same street in Sheung Shui. Police said the flats had been used to produce and store drugs.

Senior Inspector Cheng Ki-fung of the Narcotics Bureau said an initial investigation found that the three men, aged 24 to 62, worked for the same drug trafficking syndicate but police had yet to establish their exact roles.

Cheng said police were trying to determine if the drugs were for the local market, and how long the syndicate had been in operation. He said the bureau launched its investigation after receiving a tip.

At about 4.45pm on Sunday, officers intercepted a 24-year-old man leaving a flat on Chi Cheong Street in Sheung Shui. Police seized 1kg of cocaine from him and found another 4.3kg of the drug in the flat. Officers said the apartment was used as a drug storage centre.

At the same time, officers arrested a 27-year-old man in a delivery van parked outside the housing estate.
