Hong Kong International Airport has jumped five places to No 6 in an annual ranking of the world’s best terminals, with Singapore Changi reclaiming the top spot.
Hong Kong also won the world’s best airport immigration services at the Skytrax World Airport Awards, beating Singapore, Bahrain, Taiwan and Zurich.
This is the fifth time the city’s Immigration Department has taken home the award, after winning in 2020, 2019, 2016 and 2015.
Organised by British aviation consultancy Skytrax, the awards were determined by votes cast by 13 million air travellers from more than 100 jurisdictions.
Asian airports dominated the world’s best airport category, with Changi, Doha Hamad, Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Incheon and Tokyo Narita making up the top five.




Hong Kong airport came 11th in 2024 and 33rd in 2023. It has also earned airport of the year multiple times, most recently taking home the top prize in 2011.
It also ranked third for airport staff, fifth in terms of the cleanest airport and ninth when it came to airport shopping.
Changi, meanwhile, was named the world’s best airport after coming in second to Hamad International last year.
Singapore’s airport has dominated the rankings in recent years, having been in the top spot 10 times since 2013.
Director of Immigration Benson Kwok Joon-fung, who attended the ceremony in Madrid on Wednesday (Spanish time), said the department’s win for a fifth time was a recognition of its “commitment to providing the highest quality entry and exit services”.

The department said it would continue to strive for excellence, use innovative technology, introduce more measures to facilitate passengers and provide better entry and exit services to consolidate Hong Kong’s position as an international aviation hub and cooperate with the city’s overall development.
Last year, Hong Kong airport launched its long-awaited HK$141.5 billion (US$18 billion) three-runway system, which was hailed as a “game-changer” in the city’s efforts to enhance its status as an international aviation hub.
The project carried high expectations, with central government officials urging city authorities to turn Hong Kong into a world-class international aviation hub – a vision spelled out in Beijing’s latest five-year national plan.

Airport Authority CEO Vivian Cheung Kar-fay told the Post last year that the city would also move ahead with the next phase of a HK$100 billion infrastructure expansion to turn the airport into a “landmark” destination as it fuelled itself with a “sense of crisis” to beat the competition.
The project was initiated in 2019 and is scheduled to be completed by 2031. It will expand the airport’s functions and capacity by adding a purpose-built, large-scale facility for storing artwork, a 600-berth yacht club, a “Jet Fresh Market” to rival Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market and a Skycity development comprising a hotel, offices and commercial spaces.
