Hong Kong airport in frequent talks with authorities to gear up for travel recovery, Sky Bridge opens as part of HK$9 billion upgrade
- Airport Authority has ‘very frequent dialogue’ with the government and can ‘work very quickly’ to receive passengers when travel recovers
- New Sky Bridge, the tallest and largest of its kind in the world, is part of airport’s expansion and upgrade

Hong Kong International Airport remains in frequent talks with the government, and is making sure its facilities will be ready for an inflow of visitors ahead of a recovery in travel.
This comes as more airport retailers reopened on Tuesday to accommodate rising passenger traffic.
But there is no time frame as to when airport operations will return to normal, with parts of the airport still used for Covid-19 testing and the facility split into different zones to separate passengers leaving for mainland China from those travelling to other destinations.
“We have very frequent dialogue with the government as to how we react in order to receive more passengers,” Airport Authority’s executive director for engineering and technology Ricky Leung Wing-kee said.
“I can assure you that if the demand is coming, we can really work very quickly with the government to arrange whatever facilities, to prepare our concourse to receive more passengers.”

Leung was speaking at the opening of the “Sky Bridge”, a new addition that links the satellite concourse with Terminal 1. It is part of a wider HK$9 billion (US$1.15 billion) expansion and upgrade of the airport’s infrastructure and facilities, and will have an observation deck and restaurant at either end.
