Hong Kong Observatory issues T1 typhoon warning signal
Signal set to be upgraded to No 3 warning on Sunday, as city braces for squally showers and thunderstorms

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No 1 typhoon signal at 10.20pm on Saturday night, with the warning to be in place until at least 9am on Sunday before being upgraded to No 3, as the city was expected to face occasional squally showers and thunderstorms.
The weather forecaster said an area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea had intensified into a tropical depression, and was estimated to be about 690km (429 miles) south-southwest of the city at 10pm.
The Observatory is expected to upgrade the signal to the No 3 warning between 9am and noon on Sunday.
The tropical cyclone would maintain a distance of over 500km from Hong Kong on Sunday, the forecaster said.
“Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen tomorrow,” a spokesman said.
