Tropical cyclone Man-yi has been upgraded to a super typhoon but will weaken as it moves closer to Hong Kong on Monday.
The Observatory said on Saturday the super typhoon was about 1,580km (982 miles) southeast of Hong Kong and about 490km east-southeast of Manila.
“We expect Man-yi will enter within 800km of Hong Kong between Sunday night and early Monday,” scientific officer Lao Wing-kwan said.
“Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Man-yi, winds will gradually strengthen over the region next Monday and Tuesday, the Observatory will issue a tropical cyclone warning signal by then.”
He said the forecaster could not yet predict the level of typhoon warning to be issued as it would depend on the storm’s route, intensity and distance from the Pearl River Delta.
Lao said Man-yi, a name that refers to Hong Kong’s High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung, became a super typhoon at around 11pm on Friday.
He said Man-yi was expected to pass through Luzon on Sunday as a super typhoon.
It would then weaken to a typhoon as it moved closer to Hong Kong on Monday and Tuesday.
According to the Observatory, a super typhoon is the most intense tropical cyclone with a maximum sustained wind speed reaching 185km/h (115mph) or above, while a typhoon is between 118 and 149km/h.

The forecaster earlier said a strong northeast monsoon would arrive at the southern China coast on Sunday, and it might consider issuing the strong monsoon signal depending on wind conditions.
The signal is issued when winds associated with the summer or winter monsoon are blowing more than or are expected to exceed 40km/h near sea level anywhere in the city.
The wind speed range is similar to that of the No 3 typhoon warning, which is between 41 and 62km/h.
Tropical Depression Usagi, which is named after the Japanese word for the Lepus constellation, has weakened into an area of low pressure near southern Taiwan.
Earlier this week, four tropical cyclones – Toraji, Yinxing, Usagi and Man-yi – appeared in November in the northwest Pacific and the South China Sea at the same time, marking the first such occurrence since the Observatory began keeping records in 1961.
Toraji means beautiful flower that blooms unnoticed in Korean, while Yinxing is ginkgo seeds in Chinese.
The Observatory had issued on Wednesday the No 8 typhoon signal as Toraji edged closer to the city.


The forecaster earlier warned of possible minor flooding in some low-lying areas early next week due to a spring tide, which would lead to a higher sea level during high tide overnight.
“Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Man-yi on Monday and Tuesday, the sea level will generally be about a further 0.3 metres above the spring tide. Members of the public, please take appropriate precautions,” it said.
Temperatures are expected to drop progressively next week, with minimum temperatures reaching 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 Fahrenheit) or below.
The forecaster said conditions would be windy and rainy over the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea in the middle of next week due to Man-yi and the northeast monsoon.
“There will be swells,” it said. “With Man-yi departing from the coastal areas and weakening gradually, showers will ease off and the weather will become brighter over the region in the latter part of next week.”
