Storm Toraji: Hong Kong may raise T3 typhoon signal on Wednesday afternoon
Weather forecaster may upgrade warning signal on Thursday if Severe Tropical Storm Toraji intensifies
The Hong Kong Observatory has said it will consider issuing the No 3 typhoon signal on Wednesday afternoon as strong winds associated with Severe Tropical Storm Toraji are expected to affect the city later in the day.
The forecaster raised the No 1 typhoon signal at 10.20pm on Monday, marking the first time it has issued more than one storm warning in the month of November in 70 years.
It said the No 1 signal would remain in force until at least noon on Wednesday.
The signal was issued just a day after the city lowered all warnings triggered by Severe Typhoon Yinxing, which has weakened into a tropical storm.
“According to the present forecast track, the strong winds associated with Toraji will maintain quite some distance from the Pearl River [Delta on Tuesday night] to [Wednesday] morning,” the forecaster said.
“As Toraji edges closer to the coast of southern China, under its combined effect with the northeast monsoon, winds over the region will strengthen gradually later [on Wednesday].”
