About three in five Hongkongers in high-risk groups are not convinced they are likely to develop severe Covid-19 symptoms, a study has found, prompting calls from experts for early treatment ahead of a potential peak in infections.
Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, a professor of infectious disease at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), warned on Wednesday that after the summer influenza outbreak had passed, Covid-19 cases might surge at the end of this month or early December.
“We have seen an increasing trend of Covid-19 cases recently,” he said in a press conference by the Hong Kong Society for Infectious Diseases.
“For example, at Queen Mary Hospital, the number of cases has risen by 10 to 15 per cent in these two weeks.
“In every 10 Covid-19 patients, around one to two of them had to be admitted to intensive care units. I believe that in the coming weeks, these severe cases will be more common.”
The winter flu season might break out from February to April, Hung added.
