Hong Kong Observatory withdraws typhoon signal
Thunderstorm warning also in effect since early morning, though significantly stronger winds are not expected
A tropical depression near Hong Kong led to the hoisting of typhoon signal No 1 on Tuesday morning as squally showers and thunderstorms were expected, but the signal was withdrawn by 11.20pm the same day.
The Hong Kong Observatory announced at 8.45am that typhoon signal No 1 was in place, about two hours after it issued a thunderstorm signal.
“The circulation of the tropical depression is relatively compact and small. On the present forecast track, the tropical depression will maintain a distance of over 400km from Hong Kong today,” the Observatory said.
“Local winds are not expected to strengthen significantly today, and the chance of issuing the strong wind signal No 3 is not high today.”
The Observatory said there would be sunny periods on Tuesday but also a few squally showers and thunderstorms. The maximum temperature is expected to be about 32 degrees Celsius in urban areas, and a little hotter in the New Territories.
